About Me

In the high-stakes world of World of Warcraft, the difference between a “World First” kill and a “one-percent wipe” often has nothing to do with luck. It has everything to do with information.

I’m Ray Ward, and I’ve spent the last two decades obsessed with the “Shell”—the digital interface that sits between the player and the game. At CMPShells.com, I help players strip away the clutter of Azeroth to find the efficiency beneath.

My Journey: From Vanilla to the Worldsoul Saga

I stepped through the Dark Portal for the first time in 2004, but while my guildmates were focused on the scenery of Hellfire Peninsula, I was focused on the combat log. I realized early on that Blizzard’s default interface was a beautiful canvas, but a poor cockpit for a competitive pilot.

Over the years, I have worn many hats in the community:

  • The Raid Leader: Managing 40-man (and later 20-man) rosters through the most grueling encounters in the game’s history.
  • The UI Architect: Spending thousands of hours in the “LUA trenches” coding custom WeakAuras and ElvUI profiles to give my team a mechanical edge.
  • The Theorycrafter: Analyzing patch notes and PTR (Public Test Realm) data to predict how new systems—like Hero Talents or Warbands—will shift the competitive landscape.

The “CMP Shells” Philosophy

The name of this site, CMPShells, stands for Competitive Meta & Professionalism Shells.

I believe that every player deserves a “Shell” that works for them. A “Shell” is more than just a collection of addons; it is your entire tactical environment. It includes your keybinds, your macro logic, your visual alerts, and your understanding of the current meta-game.

When your “Shell” is optimized, the game becomes frictionless. You stop fighting the interface and start fighting the boss. My mission is to provide the blueprints for that optimization.

What I Build for You

On this site, I provide the tools I’ve spent twenty years refining. Whether you are a “Cutting Edge” raider or a player looking to time your first +10 Mythic dungeon, I offer:

  1. Interface Blueprints: Custom-coded UI profiles designed for maximum clarity and minimal CPU impact.
  2. The Meta-Shell: Deep-dive analyses of class tuning and raid compositions that explain why the top 1% are playing the way they are.
  3. Systems Engineering: Guides on how to navigate WoW’s increasingly complex systems—from gear upgrading to profession specialization—with 100% efficiency.
  4. The “WeakAura” Vault: A curated collection of essential strings that track the “hidden” internal cooldowns and boss mechanics that the default game hides from you.

Life Outside the Maelstrom

When I’m not debugging a complex string of code or pushing the limits of the Mythic+ ladder, I’m a firm believer in “Analog Optimization.” I live in the Pacific Northwest, where I spend my time hiking—a hobby that helps me clear my head so I can come back to the workbench with fresh eyes.

I share my home office with a Siberian Husky named LUA, who serves as my unofficial “quality control” manager (usually by nudging my arm during high-intensity raid pulls).

Let’s Optimize Your Journey

Azeroth is changing. With the arrival of the Worldsoul Saga, the game is faster and more complex than ever. You don’t have to navigate it with a “standard” setup.

I invite you to explore the guides and profiles here at cmpshells.com. My goal is to give you the “Shell” you need to reach your potential.

If you have questions about a specific UI setup or want to discuss the latest meta-shift, feel free to reach out. The digital hearth is always burning.
