In World of Warcraft, gear is temporary, but a mount is eternal. From the shimmering wings of a Gladiator’s drake to the rusted gears of a Mimiron’s Head, mounts are the ultimate “Shell” for your character. They are the primary status symbol of Azeroth.
However, many players approach mount farming as a chaotic roll of the dice. At CMPShells, we don’t believe in luck; we believe in statistical inevitability. To catch the rarest mounts in the game, you need a system. You need a “Farming Shell” that maximizes your attempts per hour and minimizes your travel time.
The Foundation: The Mount Farming “Shell” (Addons)
Before you step foot into an old raid, you need to optimize your interface for the hunt. A cluttered UI is the enemy of efficiency. Ray Ward recommends these four essential “modules” for your mount-farming shell:
- Rarity: This is your primary data tool. It tracks every attempt you make on a specific mount and provides the mathematical probability of a drop. Seeing “Attempt #243” might be painful, but data is the only way to stay sane in the long game.
- All The Things (ATT): The ultimate completionist’s bible. This addon tells you exactly what you are missing in any given zone, from mounts to hidden transmogs.
- Routes & GatherMate2: Essential for open-world rare hunting (like the Time-Lost Proto-Drake). These allow you to overlay optimized flight paths onto your map.
- SilverDragon or NPCScan: These are your “radar” systems. They alert you the millisecond a rare spawn enters your “Shell’s” range, often before you even see it on screen.
Engineering Efficiency: The “Alt Army” System
With the introduction of the Warband system in The War Within, mount farming has become a cross-account engineering project. You are no longer limited by a single character’s lockouts.
- The Warband Advantage: Mounts are account-wide. To maximize your efficiency, you should maintain a “stable” of alts parked at the entrances of legacy raids (like Icecrown Citadel or Ulduar).
- Speed Sets: Build a specific gear set for your farming alts. Focus on “Speed” tertiary stats and movement-speed enchants. A Druid or Hunter with a 150% base movement speed “Shell” will clear a legacy raid 30% faster than a standard character.
- Lockout Sharing: Use the “Group Finder” trick to share raid lockouts across your alts. You can clear a raid up to the final boss once, and then “invite” your other characters to that specific lockout, saving hours of clearing trash.
Tiered Farming: Organizing Your Quest Log
Not all mounts are created equal. To avoid burnout, Ray suggests categorizing your farm into three distinct “System Tiers”:

- Siege of Orgrimmar: Use the scroll at the entrance to skip directly to Garrosh Hellscream (once you have the achievement).
- Dragon Soul: Certain mechanics can be bypassed with high-mobility classes to shave minutes off the spine encounter.
- The Black Market Auction House (BMAH): Sometimes, the most efficient “Shell” is a massive pile of gold. Monitor the BMAH in Valdrakken or the latest hub to simply purchase the mounts that RNG has denied you.
The Architect’s Final Word: Don’t Fight the RNG
Mount farming is a marathon, not a sprint. The “Shell” I’ve built here is designed to make the process as frictionless as possible. If a farm is making you frustrated, rotate your “System.” Move from a raid farm to a reputation farm, or spend a week focusing on the latest Worldsoul Saga achievements.
